From Robin M., Elkridge, MD, USA:

SUBJECT: The Eagle Flies....

As a former First Cavalry Division soldier and lifetime member of the First Cavalry Association, I'd like to inform you that "The eagle flies" is an Army phrase that goes back -- at least -- to frontier Cavalry units in post-Civil War days, when dollars had Eagles on them and the troops were paid in cash.

Perhaps some of the "Buffalo Soldiers" picked up this bit of slang.

I wouldn't be surprised.

I have also heard, but cannot verify, that the phrase is much older than that, possibly dating as far back as the Roman Army, which also liked to use Eagles as symbols and also paid in cash.

Subject: Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans

What's up

Didn't know you moved to Nawlins.

Just started getting e-mail again so it's been awhile since I've gotten anything from you; New Orleans is my favorite city; I'm down there at least twice a year; I have this condo I have access to just about anytime except for jazzfest.

It's just a few blocks from Frenchman Street, the coolest part of the Big Easy IMO.

I was last down there New Year's eve with some folks from Germany who didn't feel what New Orleans was all about.

Almost made it to the Super Bowl/Mardi Gras but fares should drop after Carnival so I might drop in after the big party.

I agree 100 percent about your assessment of the French Quarter scene, especially Decatur Street around 3 AM.

Things in San Francisco haven't changed too much except that the dot coms are dot gones and there's lots of empty space south of Market. Even the landlords are paying folks to move in &if you know anyone who wants to move into Fox Plaza and willing to pay $1,250 for a studio with a view, let me know because management here will kick me down $500 & this time a year and a half ago there was a waiting list to get in and studio apartments were going for $2,100 a month (ouch!). . It's been cold here, just like the weather in New Orleans around New Year's eve.

Take care and I'll let you know when the next time I hit Nawlins.

We can hang at Checkpoint Charlie's or CafÈ Brasil (when it's open)

Subject: Belarus Music

Dear Natalia,

Sorry for bothering you but navigating in the web I found your brilliant article about Belarus that touched me deeply!

Let's go straight to the point! I'm crazy about world music and never listen to any kind of music about your country, so if you agree, I could send you some Cds about Brazilian music or even Latin Music, your choice, in exchange of yours (specially folkloric).

Once again, I never meant to bother you, but you're my last hope!

Best regards from Brazil,
Roberto

hello, my name is matt. i was on the derailed train in iowa. a friend of mine, who was on the train with me, e-mailed me this article. i don't know if it is ment to accuse or if it is even non-fiction or fiction. i found it humorous. are you a professional writer? the writing was fine. i had a slight problem with your research. the derailment occured on march17th 2001 at 11:30pm. correct me if i am wrong but this is well over a month after your trip in january. the casualty numbers are a bit off too. ninty three injured and two dead. i don't know about any conspiracy theories you may have come up with, but i can tell you this. i took many photograph of the entire crash site. these photos were analyzed by the f.b.i. along with many of their own and no evidence has concluded to any suspicion of intentional action. if it had been intentional, the fatality list would have been alot higher in my opinion.
thank you
matt

DOUGLAS MCDANIEL RESPONDS: Hi Matt,

Yes, although it may have been unclear, the accident did occur about a month after my trip. I have a conspiratorial mindset, and the facts that I came up with were based on the news reports at the time. The roust I describe in the story certainly was real.

If you could, tell me about your experience in the crash. Perhaps I can include it in a book I am working on. Much of the work is based on my skewed view of personal events, and how I came to realize how skewed they were. It has been a tough year. The name of the book is "Glasnost Lost." I hope to have it out as a print-on-demand book sometime this spring.

Good to hear from you.

Douglas McDaniel

From Ernest B. (No City Provided), USA:

Subject: Soviet Patriot Music

Dear Natalia, I enjoyed reading your informative article on trends in post-Soviet music.

As an American journalist, I can assure that your English-language article woud do credit to any U.S. or British writer.

I browsed your article because I love a type of music that you actually didn't mention, namely Soviet Patriot Music. To me, Soviet composers of national, patriotic music excelled those of any other country. (Surely the Soviet and now Russian-Federation national anthem is the most stirring in the world.)

I've heard and been exalted by many of the great Soviet military marches and songs popular in World War II, including those written by Muradeli and Dunayevsky, the only names I'm actually familiar with. (Do you know who wrote "The Old Oak Tree," popular in that era?).

I'm writing this note in the hope that you can identify other popular Soviet composers who wrote simliar inspirational, stirring music in World War II.

Can you mention some of the leading names, as I'd love to obtain CD's of their works?

Of course, let's hope that the countries of the world will relinquish their need for "patriotic" music and that the "retro" music of World War II, especially, remains merely a historic monument. But what a monument!

With best regards,
Ernest Blum

Subject: Millions For Reparation March, Protest and Demonstration

The Durban 400 announces a Millions For Reparation March, Protest and Demonstration

The Durban 400, a group lead by NBUF and the December 12th Movement at the World Conference Against Racism and that influenced the "Declaration" that the TransAtlantic Slave Trade and Slavery was a crime Against Humanity is calling for a Millions For Reparations March, Protest, and Demonstration in the Nations Capital, Washington, D.C. on August 17, 2002. This demonstration will honor Marcus Mosiah Garvey on the 115th Anniversary of his birth.

The Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, Slavery, and Jim Crow set the stage for the 21st Century. The policy of entrenched racism has emanated from all branches of the United States government, from the days of the auction block to the recent United States walkout of the United Nations World Conference Against Racism held in Durban, South Africa. The United States government has relentlessly held on to its white supremacist ideology.

The exploitation of African people in this country has taken many forms through the years. The centuries of chattel slavery laid the foundation of our relationship to America. From the sharecropping fields to the factories, African labor built the "super power" that is the United States. In return, we have endured the terrorism of the Ku Klux Klan, systematic lynchings, chain gangs, plantation prisons, police torture and murder, poverty, miseducation, inadquate housing, unemployment, welfare WEP programs, ACS child kidnappings, voter discrimination, crack, heroin, Rockefeller drug laws, Political Prisoners, and the assassination of our leaders. However, we're still here!!!

The demand for reparations for African people is just and simple. It is simply an attempt to "repair," to "make whole" the descendants of the victims of the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade, which was a CRIME AGAINST HUMANITY! Crimes against humanity have no stature of limitations. And our people still suffer from the vestiges of their enslavement and colonization.

We are going to the Capitol of the United States, built on slave labor, the rightful and only place to declare our human and legal right to REPARATIONS.

THEY OWE US!!! We must Struggle for Self-Determination ! We must Fight for Liberation !

Every African in American owes it to him/herself to support the fight for REPARATIONS

From Nicole Hamer, Hyde Park Review of Books, Chicago, IL, USA:

Hyde Park Review of Books' Antidote to the Incredibly Shrinking Book Review Section

Chicago, IL ‚ Februaryİ22, 2002 ‚ As Newspapers and Magazines continue to slash the size of their book review sections, and diminish the importance of a serious book culture in the US, the Hyde Park Review of Books is proud to announce the launch of an exclusively online antidote to the incredibly shrinking book review section.

Quarterly and exclusively online, Hyde Park Review of Books features literary critiques of the most promising fiction and serious nonfiction from small, medium, independent, and University presses as well as a few larger publishers.

Our goal is to provide the largest review forum for the most promising fiction and serious nonfiction books from authors and publishers often overlooked or under reported on by other review publications.

From Danilo D'Antonio, Teramo, ITALY:

Subject: In order for another world to become a possibility

To G21:

In order for another world to become a possibility

In present human societies, in which the most important, the most strategic roles encompassing organization, administration, finance, education, culture, information, health and public safety, are assigned for life to certain persons, as a matter of fact the State lives well far from the common Citizens. The State appears like an impenetrable hard stone, at all immodifiable by those who where excluded from it. These two entities, State and Citizens, that for social pact should coincide, should be one only thing, as a matter of fact remain separated and often opposed.

It is often written in the constitutions of the countries of the world that "sovereignty belongs to the people" (meaning to all the people!), but the reality is vastly different. Most of the countries of the world literally belong to those persons who are assumed for life in the key positions of the State, whether they are representatives or their subordinates. Present nations are in the hands of a real oligarchy --of a low level but spread everywhere-- that still lords and subject in a subtle, sly manner the remaining part of the population. Nations are so prevented from a natural evolution towards that the various situational ambits indeed demand.

If we are not in agreement with our government's policies, do not lose other time: concentrate our energies toward removing that particular model of social organization, which is the basis for every harmful behaviour of the Governments, and which gives full power to multinational corporations and economic empires. Public Employment for Life is the deep, hidden, mean origin of the majority of the world's problems, be they in ecology, human rights, peace or the economy, or in any other area.

Demand, therefore, for what it is impossible to deny the absolute legitimacy: claim for rotation of Public Employment, so that it can become equally shared and of real common belonging. On the day in which this new social system would come to the fore, no longer, for example, public forces (persons that today are also them assumed for life, becoming so faithful keepers of oligarchyc States) will rage against the demonstrators. The seeds of a new society, without monopolization and exclusion, based instead on equal sharing and full participation by all, will take root. On that day even such ambitious aims as to see every woman, every man on Earth having a work, and therefore an income, minimum guaranted, will become much more easily attainable.

Public Employment for Life is the weak ring of an otherwise indestructible chain that binds a whole world and keeps it from achieving social progress and justice. Public Employment for Life is the ring that today, in the interest of all, we must definitively break.
