SUBJECT: Thoughts from a Preacher's Kid

Excuse me sir, but could I have a moment of your time. I just read through your article, and I beg to differ. For one, some of us have a little self respect. I know that if some of the other PK's I know had read this, your inbox would be full. I know that I don't appriciate it being spread across the internet that you will have a wild time with a preacher's daughter. And another thing...I don't appreciate you saying that all preachers are just puttin on a show. Some are heart felt and sincere. Yes I admit that there are some people out there saying one thing and doing another. But that doesn't mean all preachers are hipocrites. I would appreciate it if you wouldn't put trash about people like me on the internet anymore.

Sincerly,
A PK

RADIO RAHEEM RESPONDS: Dawn the Preacher's Kid,

I certainly appreciate getting your opinion on that article. I must've written "House of the Spirit" what? Two years ago or something? I'm always surprised when someone reads something I wrote that's that molded.

I'm sorry you disagree with some of the opinions I expressed there. But RDR is our Opinion page, as it says at the top. That was mine. Read some of my other articles, I'm not all that bad.

From Frank B. Portland, OR, USA:

SUBJECT: Hey

Hi Rod,

How are things? Congrats on your writer getting the Caine Prize. I saw that on the BBC today, and it led me to your site.

I just wanted to drop you a note, because I'm a freelancer in Portland, Oregon. It looks like there's some great stuff on your site. I'm getting ready to go to Thailand for the year, and am looking for outlets, markets, etc. I write for the CS Monitor, Outside, Mother Jones, World Hum and other places like that.

I noticed that on your guidelines, you say "paid or unpaid" or something along those lines. Do you pay for stories? If you have time to drop me a note, I'd appreciate it. I would love to have another place in mind for the fun stuff.

Hope things are well,

best,
Frank B.

ROD RESPONDS: I got it from the BBC. Sent links to all folks on the mailing list yesterday and just updated the cover with the announcement & link to BBC article today.

Congrats! Couldn't have happened to a better writer.

Let me know when you come up for air.

Cheers,
Rod

From John M. , London, UK:

SUBJECT: Wainaina's Work

I am no literary critic but I really enjoyed this first half of Wainaina' short story. I met him last night in London. Question. Was the Nandi Woman picture one in the Joy Adamson series in which she painted each of Kenya's main tribes, mainly to show the traditional costume rather than to depict faces accurately? But anyway Wainaina's comments about the facial expression are very interesting.

John M.

ROD RESPONDS: John,

Thanks for visiting G21 and for writing. I'm forwarding on your message to Binj for him to respond.

From Bob B., (No City Provided), USA:

SUBJECT: Bush

Thanks for your powerful words. I, too, detest Shrub and his greedy leaders, supporters and followers. We are currently in a stinking mess: America, right or wrong. Few of our elected leaders criticize the Bush administration. Several critics have received envelopes containing anthrax spores. High alerts are designed to keep us off balance, permitting the Maladminstration to push through its agenda with a paucity of input from either Congress or citizens. We have military tribunals, the Patriot Act, withdrawal from the ABM treaty, Biological Weapons Convention, the Kyoto Accord, Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, International Criminal Court, etc., etc, ad nauseam. The latest pernicious idiocy is TIPS, promoted by the paranoid Ashcroft, whose program. if implemented, would cause a national epidemic of his disease. No security is possible given the Bush&Co Malfactors. They must be stopped. The question is: How?

Awaiting your reply,
Bob B.

THOMAS HART RESPONDS: Bob, thanks for taking the time to care enough about this durn country to write in!!! Most people don't, from what I've noticed.

The ANSWER is simple and I'm not the only writer who's brought it up in G21 this year: THERE'S A MIDTERM ELECTION COMIN' UP. VOTE THE BASTARDS OUT! If the Republicans take enough flack for being The Party of Business, now that we know what crooks most CEOs really are, you'll see change -- and FAST!

Next, we take back the White House from His Fraulency and the Bush Leaguers! Got it?

From Binyawainaina Wainaina, London, UK:

TO: Nation Media Group, Kenya
SUBJECT: Robert Oduol

I would like to express my dismay at the untimely death one of our finest writers. I met Robert Oduol a few years ago, online, as it happnes these days. We were both Africa correspondents for one of the web's oldest and best magazines: www.g21.net. I found him to be generous with resources and information, warm, and deeply insightful in his writing. His enormous talent will be missed by all who knew him.

From Rupert H., London, UK:

SUBJECT: Binyavanga Wainaina

Dear Rod

I am a literary agent in the UK, and I recently read Mr Wainaina's marvellous story 'Discovering Home' on your excellent website. It is a worthy winner of the Caine Prize.

I noted that Mr Wainaina has a novel underway, and I would be very interested to contact him, and, if possible, to see some of this work, with an ultimate view to representing him.

Would you be able to put me in touch with the author? I'd be very grateful for any assistance you can offer.

Best wishes
Rupert H.

ROD RESPONDS: Rupert, thanks for visiting G21 and your kind words about Binj's story and our publication. I'm forwarding this missive on to him and you'll find his contact information below. Here's hoping you develop a mutually beneficial relationship.

Cheers!

From Roselyne M., (No City Provided), KENYA:

SUBJECT: Binyawanga Wainaina

A friend forwarded me Wainaina's award winning article which I LOVED. Congratulations to him. How can we get a hold of him to forward him more congratulations and let him know that we are eagerly waiting his first novel? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Roselyne M.

ROD RESPONDS: Roselyne,

Thanks for visiting G21 and for writing. I've provided Binj's contact information below in this e-mail.

Cheers,
Rod
