SUBJECT: shaving/barbers in kenya

Thank you for your well constructed website. It educative and very informative.

I would like to know what some traditional Kenyan tribes used for shaving and the tools if possible.

What made them shave?
Was it ceremonial?
What was the significance?
What tools did they use?
How has the art of shaving in Kenya evolved?

ROD RESPONDS: Kariuki, I've forwarded your questions on to Binyavanga Wainaina, our Africa writer, who is busy as a bee right now, but should get back to you soon. Thanks for visiting The World's Magazine!

SUBJECT: The September 11th Special Edition

Rod:
I enjoyed your extended editorial on "the year after" -- which means, of course, that I agree with your major theme and most of your points. The local paper here ("The Reading Eagle") asked readers to submit entries for a special section next week describing, in 50 words or less, how 911 changed us. Here was my submission (in 49 words), which is unlikely to be published:

"The past year has corroded my confidence in our future. We¹ve been exposed as a shallow, timid nation that lacks the courage of our Founding Fathers¹ convictions: Our leaders are afraid to lead, our citizens are afraid of freedom, and we mistake solidarity in response to attack for patriotism."

Happy trails,
Bob

From Fred G., Los Angeles, CA, USA:

SUBJECT: the new National City Lines?

Gentles --

I've enjoyed your rant against LA's MTA.

Hope you'll pursue my outline:

The destruction of streetcars was not cheap for the capitalists. Do they now have a more cost effective method of stopping the renaissance of rail?

Today's capitalists can hire enough public officials to close Amtrak and dependent commuter lines for a few million dollars. Mere peanuts if a few hundred politicians can be bought for a hundred thousand each.

Who benefits? Airlines will be glad to assert how essential they are when travel options comprise busses, autos and shank's mares; their begging bowls will overflow with our money. Plane makers & fuel distillers will help; auto builders want to sell a car for the trip from Denver to Chicago and oil companies want to fuel it. Oil companies are delighted to sell asphalt or, at least, the costly component of the mix.

Do we hear echoes of Enron, Harken, Halliburton, Bush? Cries of "Rape the Arctic"?

We must be thankful for the dull imaginations of these monsters. If they were less ignorant the future would be targeted: *virtual* travel/meetings/conventions--the Web.

SUBJECT: The Year After

Dear Mr. Amis,

Just wanted to let you know that your editorial The Year After was EXCELLENT! You truly are a great writer. I think it would be cool if you would write a book. It's always refreshing to get to the center of the blow pop without having to go through the "candy-coating" first. I am really interested in writing for you from time to time and I was wondering if there are any issues that you would like to see adressed from the female perspective? Let me know. I'll type up an arcticle for you and you can check it out. I have only been on this earth for 32 years, but after reading your editorial, I know that you are a voice in America that needs to be heard.

cheers to you and your honesty!

From Danny Schecter, Publisher, MEDIACHANNEL.ORG, New York, NY, USA:

SUBJECT: A Message from Danny Schecter

Dear MediaChannel Reader,

It's been a quiet summer on MediaChannel.org (winter, for our readers down under). As you've seen from our update earlier this week, we're getting ready to return in September with our Daily Media News, Weekly Updates and more new features and services.

I've been working on two films and a new book (more on those below) and continuing to write my daily News Dissector's Weblog.

I've been following the crises and crashes around the world with daily headlines and op-eds from Globalvision News Network. It's an innovation in world news reporting -- GVNews.Net -- that takes on the major news providers (AP, Reuters, NY Times and CNN) by offering a more diverse network of sources.

As you know, I am always interested in people taking a stand in the media marketplace, using their expertise to bring forth something meaningful and valuable to them and to the human community.

GVNews.Net does just that in journalism. It delivers real International News written by real people -- journalists in KAZAKHSTAN, CONGO, COLOMBIA... and elsewhere.

It's not controlled by politicians or edited by corporate marketing departments. It allows you to be aware of what's happening outside U.S. borders. Whether you're interested in observing the global marketplace or just being a good citizen of the world, I recommend you take a look at what GVNews.Net has created:

http://www.gvnews.net

If you like what GVNews.Net has done, please send the news on to friends and colleagues who are committed to being informed good citizens.

GVNews.Net is offering you a free trial of "The News Shadow" and "News Not in the News," their unique e-news services. Today's "News Shadow" is pasted below. To sign up for free daily news "Alerts" that are sent to your email address visit:

http://www.gvnews.net/newreg/htm/newreg.html

I hope that, like myself, you will find this service both enlightening and informative. Below are the announcements for my film and book projects and information on how to get copies, followed by a sample of the GVNews.Net "News Not in the News."

Happy reading,

Danny Schechter

By Danny Schechter, Executive Editor, MediaChannel.org

Mediachannel.org Editor Danny Schechter has compiled a collection of his articles and Weblog entries tracking media coverage September 11 and the aftermath. This is the first book-length critique of media coverage of the War on Terrorism featuring news and analysis missing in the American press. 2. A HARD HITTING VIDEO

"COUNTING ON DEMOCRACY"

Wrote the Taos Film Festival: "This tale of race, political payback, voter fraud and justice deferred could have come out of a Hollywood thriller. But no-this is the story of the 2000 Presidential election in Florida, one of the most startling, disturbing events in recent years. Directed by investigative reporter Danny Schechter and produced by Faye Anderson. "Counting on Democracy" is a jaw-dropping, even terrifying account of just how shallow our nation's commitment to democracy can be." Narrated by Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. See http://www.globalvision.org for a clip and more information about how to order.

3. A DVD AND TV SCREENING

"WE ARE FAMILY," the Globalvision film that premiered at the Sundance Film festival will be shown on September 11 on the new TRIO Channel on cable at 9:30pm, 11:30 pm and 1:30am in its entirety. The film chronicles the remake of the hit song as a call for tolerance and global unity in the aftermath of September 11. More than 200 stars of every genre of music took part. Spike Lee directed the music video and Danny Schechter directed the feature length documentary with Patrice O 'Neil.

Tommy Boy Films is releasing WE ARE FAMILY on DVD for sale in video stores. The package includes additional scenes and Spike Lee's music video.

Roger Friedman reviewed the film for Fox: "Last night I had a chance to see Danny Schechter's remarkable and moving documentary, We Are Family. This is the film that was made on Sept. 22 and 23 with celebrities, doctors, firemen, and police personnel to raise money for World Trade Center-related charities. Go see it, and if it's not playing in your town soon, ask your local small movie house to get it."

From Artcamp, Taxco, Guerrero, MEXICO:

SUBJECT: We have been Awarded the Prize for Women's Creativity in Rural Life

World Rural Women's Day October 15, 2002

The Artcamp rural womens artisans cooperative in Mexico has been Awarded the Prize for Women's Creativity in Rural Life from the Women's World Summit Foundation in Geneva Switzerland

The Women's World Summit Foundation ( WWSF) has announced the 2002 winners of the Prize for Women's Creativity in Rural Life.

The rural womens artisans cooperative, ArtCamp, of Tecalpulco, Taxco, Mexico, nominated by Global Marketplace (a Rocklin, California, nonprofit marketer of handmade crafts from developing nations) is one of the groups chosen to receive the prestigious award.

ArtCamp was honored for its creative use of modern digital technology and for its social projects with Tecalpulco’s fresh water commission and on behalf of the Taxco public hospital.

On the Artcamp website the cooperative presents a bi-lingual study of the Aztec Calendar for use by shoolchildren; Artcamp has also written a romantic e-novel with graphics taken from the faces and scenes of Tecalpulco and Taxco. It is about a young village girl whose heart is stolen by a macho bull-rider.

The cooperative was founded by village women in response to the crisis caused by the fact that their men have mostly all migrated to he United States as illegal wetback labor.  According to the Comisario of Tecalpulco, 156 adults are in the United States this summer.

Many men make new families in the years that they are gone.  Handcrafts production is traditional livelihood in Tecalpulco The women have fallen back upon jewelrymaking to sustain themselves and nourish their families.

WWSF, a humanitarian, non-governmental and international, non-confessional and non-profit organization with United Nations consultative status (ECOSOC, UNFPA and DPI), works for a new development paradigm with and for women and children.

Rural women all over the world play a major role in ensuring food security and maintaining stability in rural areas. Yet, they frequently lack the power to secure land rights or to access services such as credit, inputs, extension, training and education. That Third World women be empowered is the WWSF mission.

Six of the 32 winners will be invited to Geneva for an Award ceremony on World Rural Women's Day - 15 October. This year the prize celebration will be held at the Swiss National Exposition Expo.02 (ExpoAgricole) at Morat (Murten).

ArtCamp will be awarded the prize on World Rural Women's Day, October 15, 2002.

Global Marketplace has been Artcamp’s friends and partner in this project allowing ArtCamp to accept credit card payments from its customers Globalmarketplace has provided Artcamp with a showcase for its handcrafted jewelry at its Yahoo Shopping website http://www.globalmarketplace.org/arinmex.html Artcamp’s own website is http://www.artcamp.com.mx.html
