Below you'll find the latest letters from YOU.

Kudos, brickbats, spam, you'll find it all right here. Who knew so many people could even find this Web magazine?

Let's play!

QUESTION FOR OUR READERS: The format on this "Letters to the Editor" page hasn't changed in about three (3) years. That's been because we've always conceived it as a "functional" page and, frankly, a bit of a chore.

But thinking here has changed. Even this page can be improved. So we need your feedback.

  1. Do you like the "general notices", outside information and press releases we run at the end of this page? Should that section be discontinued?
  2. Do you think this page should be run more or less frequently than it is now?
  3. Do you have suggestions for improving this page?
Let us know by dropping at line to "rod@g21.net". Thanks in advance!

SUBJECT: Excellent Piece!

Hey Rod!

A quick cheers to you: Really enjoyed your latest My Glass House, "Days Like Weeks"...very sharply written and keenly felt. Reading the piece rather transported me right to the Quarter, and it was a vivid trip indeed. Keep up the great work...I'm always happy to find good writing on the Web, and your piece is indeed fine.

Cheers, your faithful reader and very irregular contributor,
Steve V.

ROD RESPONDS: Steve

That means even more coming from a fellow writer! Thanks for taking the time to let me know I got it right. Though, I'd also say we try each week to provide "good writing on the Web" in all of our columns. Our 'Smiley Face' logo.

Cheers,
Rod

SUBJECT: Right Under My Nose

Dear Sir,

A friend pointed me to your magazine and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it originates right here in the Crescent City. Yours is truly a unique and unusual product that I hope to enjoy more of over time.

Loved the interview with our wonderful new Mayor! Bravo!

Regards,
Peter S.

SUBJECT: Stuart Altman

Rod,

Generally, I rather enjoy your Web 'Zine because you don't only write about American topics. But sometimes some of your columnists rub the wrong way. That's the case with this barrister, Stuart Altman. I don't think he's funny.

You asked for our opinions.

Melinda

From Keila F., Washington, DC, USA:

SUBJECT: CR of Howard Univ

Hi,

My name is Keila F. and I am a sophomore public relations major at Howard University. I am the Executive director of the newly rechartered College Republican Club of Howard University. Currently I am in the midst of planning a CR week scheduled for November 17th. I would like to get in touch with the Washington DC Republican Committee Executive Director Vickey Wilcher, after reading your article. Do you have any contact information for her? If so, would you be willing to pass it on? Thanks for you help.

Keila F.

ROD RESPONDS: Keila,

Thanks for visiting G21 and for writing. I'm uncertain which of our articles you're referring to and certainly don't know Ms. Wilcher. So I'm sure I can't be of assistance.

I'm sure you can get contact information at the G.O.P. Web site.

Good Luck,
Rod

Steve V., New York, NY, USA:

SUBJECT: Another good one!

Rod:

You're batting average is higher than Barry Bonds'--another excellent piece in the latest g21! *Really* well composed, with passages of real *beauty* woven into the structure.

"I take no comfort in orthodoxy, even if it's an orthodoxy of my own stripe. In fact, any comfort to be had in orthodoxy should make any of us suspect if we also claim to be critical and independent thinkers."
Right on the money! Orthodoxy is often an invitation to just stop thinking, unless the orthodoxy is merely a truism such as, "One shouldn't chainsaw infants, " "One shouldn't run over old ladies at the corner, " etc., etc.

I liked Lapham's piece too. Sure, he's a Martha's Vineyard Leftist...maybe one of those "friends of the people" who snicker at the bourgeois bumpkin who likes ranch dressing on iceburg lettuce (as opposed to pate de foie gras). But you're right: it was a good, thought provoking piece.

And so was yours.

Cheers,
Steve

"This revelatory, often dismaying account provides a cogent explanation of why many African-Americans have such a jaded view of our legal system." - Publisher's Weekly

One of the most well-known attorneys spins tales of courtroom drama, racism and the good life in this memoir of his professional life. As Cochran freely concedes, his representation of O.J. Simpson transformed him from a lawyer into a celebrity. Although a fierce critic of the racism he sees in the legal system, Cochran says the common perception that he is anti-law enforcement is wrong. He began his career as a prosecutor, but he is on a mission to eradicate racism wherever he finds it.

Johnnie Cochran's high-profile clients have included Michael Jackson, Reginald Denny, Amadou Diallo, Abner Louima, O.J. Simpson, Tupac Shakur, Sean Combs, Snoop Dogg and Todd Bridges. His first book, Journey to Justice, was a national bestseller. He lives in New York and Los Angeles.

Best regards,
Ruthie Wittenberg

SUBJECT: Newtopia Magazine Night in Chicago

QUIMBY'S TO HOST FIRST ANNUAL NEWTOPIA MAGAZINE NIGHT IN CHICAGO!

"Newtopia is one of today's most challenging and provocative journals. Exceptionally cogent in its analysis and mature in its contents, Newtopia reflects the standard for which all serious publications should strive." --Phil Hall, contributing writer for the Hartford Courant & Wired Magazine; contributing editor, Film Threat Magazine

On Saturday November 23, 2002 at 7:00 PM four of the internet's best underground writers will converge within the renowned Quimby's bookstore for the first annual Newtopia night reading.

Newtopia, the Internet's intriguing new socio-political publication, is hosting its first reading to announce the release of Steffi's Club, the debut novel by Newtopia Associate Editor D.A. Blyler. Blyler will read an excerpt from his absinthe-fueled romp through the Czech Republic and will be available to sign copies of his book.

Also reading will be Editor in chief Charles Shaw, Associate Editor Greg Everett and Associate Editor Kimberly Nichols. Shaw is a political activist/writer from Chicago who also edits for 3 AM Magazine. He will read excerpts from his soon-to-be-published book Unfinished Portraits. He is the book editor for UR Chicago and has work forthcoming in Punk Planet. Nichols, a writer and artist from Southern California, is known for her column Diary of a Californicator at 3 AM Magazine, which she also co-edits. She will read from her upcoming book of short stories Mad Anatomy. Everett hails from Chico, California where he is the owner of Grundle Ink Publications. He will read from his acclaimed novel Screaming at a Wall.

Newtopia was founded this year by Charles Shaw. Showcasing some of the most widely known underground writers, and patrolling the outer frontier of new media, Newtopia represents a collective vision of the People and their Politics, a critical examination of the society in which we live, and a celebration of the culture it fosters.

In only its first months Newtopia has won a Golden Web Award and a Perfect World citation, been featured in UR Chicago, and The Hartford Courant, (syndicated nationally by the Chicago Tribune), and been showcased on Webshots, Yahoo, and the original "Cool Site of the Day". Newtopia consistently wins tops honors with the compendium site Zinos.com. Newtopia's Editor's work can be read regularly in such publications as Salon, Clamor, Punk Planet, Ur Chicago, Web Del Sol, and 3am Magazine.

Everyone is invited to attend. To contact the writers, arrange interviews, or for more information, please call Charles Shaw at 773.334.6989 or email charles@newtopiamagazine.net.

From Connie Stahl, (No City Provided), CA, USA:

SUBJECT: The incarceration of Kathryn Debra Delettre

The Women's Institute today announced its campaign against all parties responsible for the outrageous incarceration of Kathryn Debra (Kt) Delettre on charges of kidnapping her own son.

"Kt has now been held for over four months at the Las Cruces Detention Center in New Mexico under order of extradition by Governor Gray Davis," said Melinda Pillsbury-Foster, President of the Womenıs Institute. "We have an organizing committee circulating a petition in New Mexico. A similar group is now organizing in California."

Kt was instrumental in providing input through the office of State Senator Sheila James Kuehl of the 23rd Senate District that changed the present law, denying custody to abusive parents. Senator Kuehl wrote the Governor on July 16th on Kt's behalf. The Governor never responded.

"We need to hold those in power responsible for negligence and the abuse of public trust. Each of the individuals who allowed this to happen should be liable in their own persons. That is the change that would make this kind of thing less likely. As long as they can hide behind the institution, be it courts or the office of Governor or the social welfare system no one is safe. If you can hold your contractor liable you should be able to hold social workers, judges and the governor liable as well. Accountability is one of the most effective means for regulating behavior. We do a disservice to every citizen when we fail to do this. If these people were as accountable as the guy who builds your kitchen shelves Kt would be free today."

The Womenıs Institute has dedicated a portion of its website to the campaign to Free Kt. The site can be viewed at: womenisinstitutes.com
