THE WORLD - From Floyd R., Odessa, TX, USA:

SUBJECT: Tabloid Hart

Mr. Hart,

I can see how your southern humor would appeal to the northern crowd. It adds more fuel to the fire that all southerners are hillbillies and trailer trash. I was sitting here reading some of your "work" and it got me to remembering. When?I was a child my grandfather had an old black man who worked for him. The man's name was Mr. Burl, I never knew his last name, but it was probably Washington or?Jefferson or some such. He could do the "buck and wing", pat out the "ham bone" on his thigh, laugh loud and long at any white mans' joke (even if it was a stupid joke) and generally suck up to any white man. He was what was referred to as a "house nigger" or "white mans' nigger". Men like him set the civil rights' movement back by 100 years. Thank you for portraying southerners as backward and trashy. I am sure that your northern masters appreciate your humor.

Merry Christmas,
Floyd L. R.

TOM HART RETURNS TO RESPOND:

Mr. R,

Until the Editor here sent me your dang letter, I was beginnin' to think that folks here abouts had forgotten me already. I've only been gone a couple months!

I'm glad you took time out of your busy and (obviously) highly literate pursuits to ignore a lot of the durned stuffy and "serious" writers here at GENERATOR 21 to devote time to studying my body of work. I'm proud of the humor and everyday topics of able to bring to these pages for all them years.

What I don't get, though, is your reference to my "northern masters." I mean, this here magazine for published outtah New Orleans, Louisiana, for over three years. New Orleans don't strike me, at least, as very "northern." Before that -- except when our Editor took his World Tour and went over to Europe -- it was comin' outtah Baltimore for about as long. Now, I guess, since Maryland is where the Mason-Dixon Line actually used to be, you could say it was kindah "northern." But I don't get the idea that folks living there thinks so ...

And -- oh! by the way -- did you notice that you get to my column from them cover pages in the back issues of this here magazine by clickin' on the link that says, "SATIRE?"

Happy New Year!
Tom

From Cheryl N., (No City Provided,) VT, USA:

SUBJECT: Don't spend a dime on January 20

It doesn't really matter that everyone will be out spending what they didn't the next day - a point or two will have been made: Since our religious leaders will not speak out against the war in Iraq, since our political leaders don't have the moral courage to oppose it.

Inauguration Day, Thursday, January 20th, 2005 is "Not One Damn Dime Day" in America.

On "Not One Damn Dime Day" those who oppose what is happening in our name in Iraq can speak up with a 24-hour national boycott of all forms of consumer spending. During "Not One Damn Dime Day," please don't spend money. Not one damn dime for gasoline. Not one damn dime for necessities or for impulse purchases. Not one damn dime for anything for 24 hours.

On "Not One Damn Dime Day," please boycott Walmart, KM art and Target. Please don't go to the mall or the local convenience store. Please don't buy any fast food (or any groceries at all for that matter). For 24 hours, please do what you can to shut the retail economy down.

The object is simple. Remind the people in power that the war in Iraq is immoral and illegal; that they are responsible for starting it and that it is their responsibility to stop it.

"Not One Damn Dime Day" is to remind them, too, that they work for the people of the United States of America, not for the international corporations and K Street lobbyists who represent them and funnel cash into American politics.

"Not One Damn Dime Day" is about supporting the troops. The politicians put the troops in harm's way. Now 1,300 brave young Americans and (some estimate) 100,000 Iraqis have died. The politicians owe our troops a plan -- a way to come home.

There's no rally to attend. No marching to do. No left or right wing agenda to rant about. On "Not One Damn Dime Day" you take action by doing nothing. You open your mouth by keeping your wallet closed.

For 24 hours, nothing gets spent, not one damn dime, to remind our religious leaders and our politicians of their moral responsibility to end the war in Iraq and give America back to the people.

Please share this email with as many people as possible.

From Fred W., (No City Provided,) USA:

I read your info on Jane Jarvis. I always loved listening to her organ playing at Shea Stadium in the 60's &70's. Do you Know of any audio music files she may have playing at the ball park? Thank you! i would love to contact her.

Fred W.

ROD RESPONDS:

Fred,

Thanks for visiting The World's Magazine and for writing. The article you reference appeared back in 2000 and the writer of that column, my dear old friend Bob Powers, as since moved on to other things. I did try to contact him for more recent information about Ms. Jarvis but did not get a response by our "press time."

I would recommend going to Arbors Records and seeing what they can tell you.

Cheers!
Rod

From Ngozi Razak-Soyebi, Lagos, NIGERIA:

SUBJECT: G21 Person of the Year

Dear Rod,

I'm not too sure about this, but I thought there was a nomination for G21 PERSON OF THE YEAR. If I haven't got it all mixed up in the euphoria of Christmas and the new year, I'd like to nominate MEDIA EDITOR, BRAD BALFOUR. He does a wonderful job for the magazine, and his interviews are first class.

Keep up the good work, Brad. G21 wouldn't be the same without your great interviews. Could we have pictures of these great personalities always, though?

Regards,
Ngozi

From Meredith F., (No City Provided,) USA:

SUBJECT: American Dreams - "Against the Electoral College"

Dear Ron,

Hello,?I am senior in high school and?I am currently researching for a paper concerning the flaws in the electoral college. I have read your article, and I am very impressed with the figures and the information that you provide. I was hoping that you could provide me with your sources for this article, as well as your credentials, qualifications, etc., so that I can cite your article as a credible source. Anything that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time,
Sincerely,
Meredith F.

RON DIENER RESPONDS:

Who am I? Ronald Ernst Diener, born Sheboygan, Wisconsin, August 13, 1937, second generation American [grandparents came (1909) from the Volga region in Russia, so-called Volga-Deutsch or German-Russians], five children, six grandchildren, currently living in Wendell, North Carolina. Education:?Northwestern Prep (1955), Northwestern College (BA, 1959), University of Missouri (master's, classical languages 1962), Concordia Seminary (master of divinity, 1964), University of Illinois (master of library science, 1965), Harvard University (doctorate, church history, 1979) - professionally a librarian for almost forty years. At the moment, systems librarian at the North Carolina Supreme Court Library. I wrote the article using resources of the Supreme Court Library in the area of politics, government and law - I do not remember which titles particularly, as the article was written without footnotes. The question of the Electoral College is a favorite of mine and I have followed debates about it for most of my adult life - a parallel issue being the distribution of two senators per state, a most undemocratic arrangement, from a very undemocratic U.S. Constitution.

The issues about the Electoral College are numerous; if you have a specific?problem you would like to pursue with me, please indicate it.

I am happy you read the?article and responded as you did. Oh, by the way, who is Meredith F. (your turn!).

Ron Diener
