THE WORLD -
From Prince C., Memphis, TN, USA:
SUBJECT: Clifford Thornton
A friend recently shared your online piece on Cliff. I am a member of the Wesleyan class of 1970. I took a year off in 1968, worked for an anti-poverty agency on the Lower East Side of NYC along with Cliff, who was employed to provide music education to young people. I'm so very proud to say that it was through this friendship that Cliff made the connection with Wesleyan. Actually, I had met Cliff before when he appeared at Wesleyan with Sun Ra earlier. For your information, I've passed your piece along to several of my schoolmates, who were also very close to Cliff. As a busy practicing lawyer, I've gone far astray from the music. For some reason over the years I was never able to find much information on Cliff. There now appears to have been a breakthrough. He seems to be all over the internet. In all events, I just wanted to touch base. Thank you for all that you're doing to keep Cliff's music and memory alive.
Prince C.
ROD RESPONDS:Thanks for visiting G21 and for writing. It's appreciated. It's letters like yours that keep the effort worth continuing. Hope you'll read other of our articles, as well.Cheers,
Rod
ADDENDUM - Not included in the original e-mail response: Prince, I certainly hope you did come back to the magazine and you are reading this. That was probably one of the most half-assed, lame responses I've given to a heartfelt letter in many a moon! I apologize.
Especially considering the impact Cliff Thornton had on so many of our lives, there was A LOT more I could and should have said.
Unfortunately, as many of the regular writers here know from experience, it depends on what day you catch me. I'm working on that. I can only be happy that the Web allows for the article to be there as long as the grass grows so that what I meant to say is readily available. Thanks for sharing your experiences with Cliff with me and our readers. That's appreciated, too. RA
From Ngozi Razak-Soyebi, Lagos, NIGERIA:
Dear Rod,
So, so sorry I haven't replied to this poll. Thought I did.
TREND I'D LIKE TO SEE DISAPPEAR FROM THE CULTURE RADAR: Ladies who "consciously" allow their bras to peep out of their clothings in the name of fashion. No matter how fashionable it is or how trendy the bra is, I think it is so gross!
CLICHE: "Have a nice day." I so, so hate to hear people say this, Rod. Who's to say I'll have a nice day afterwards?
PEOPLE IN THE NEWS: Our own President Olusegun Obasanjo. He talks a load of crap these days, and I think his government has lost focus. Could you really arrange for him and his bigwigs to disappear entirely, Rod? Please!
That's all I can come up with, Rod, without thinking too deeply about the question. Hope it is of some help.
Regards,
Ngozi

Just to let you know, I agree with you completely. These women have created a myth around what is currently classified as a mental disorder, pretending that they are cleansing themselves of evil, or purer or more disciplined than most people - whatever! In reality, they are selfish pigs, who ruin the lives of the people who care about them and try to get them not to starve themselves. My sister had bulimia, and eventually I told her ,"You want to kill yourself, go ahead, I don't care anymore." And guess what - she started eating normal meals, and having normal periods again. These people deserve everything they get. They are selfish assholes.

SUBJECT: The Poll
good question. I hope my answers are up to it.
THE POLL QUESTION: What five trends, clichÈs, people in the news would you like to see disappear from the culture radar IMMEDIATELY?
1. Global warming as a man-made phenomenon
2. Dangerous Arabs
sorry, I can only think of two right now. maybe more later.

SUBJECT: In Your Shoes
hi,
I've just read your article, actually two of your articles, one was about the titanium mining saga and the other[which is the one which made me look for you in the search engine hence come across the other article] was on writing for international markets.
i actually am in your shoes[kind of], my husband lost his job quite unceremoniously and i've had to prematurely halt the baby raising lull i've been in and go back to freelancing, only this time i want to do it big because short of a miracle, i'm now the bread earner and the small cash i used to get wont do the job.
i really would like some advice from you to know how to go about this, i live in uganda and i right prose, fiction, real life articles like weddings, marriage etc.
please advise.
Biting my nails as i anxiously wait to hear from you.
Joanne E.
ROD RESPONDS:Joanne,Thanks for visiting G21 and for writing. It's appreciated!
I wish I could say freelance markets were easy but the truth is that it takes as much work locating appropriate publications, culling their guidelines and finally selling a story idea as it does to actually do the writing. It's not for the faint-hearted.
There's a very good site http://www.freelancewriting.com/ that lists many markets, requests for queries and other resources. I'd recommend you try your hand there. Best of luck.
Regards,
Rod

Have ever heard of moral turpitude? Have you ever kept a promise to someone? Have you ever felt a sense of duty to someone or something? Are you morally bankrupt? If you can answer no! to these questions go into politics.
ROD RESPONDS:John,Thanks for visiting the magazine and for writing.
Since we haven't published any articles by the author you reference in over a year and half, your letter evidences to me that Charlie's articles still have "legs."
As publisher of a "general interest" Web site, I've learned over the years that people only come back to your site, after hitting it once, for one (or some combination of three) reason(s):
The advertisers who those of us in the general interest category hope will help cover some of our expenses don't care which of those three reasons people have for returning to a site and thus keeping it viable, they just want your numbers to stay consistent or -- better yet -- grow.
- they found it amusing;
- they were uniquely informed or;
- they got pissed off.
During the years I did publish Charlie's articles, he consistently produced solid numbers and had as large a fan club as he did a flame club. That worked for me.
Take that under advisement the next time you feel inclined to write a publisher about one of his columnists.
Cheers!
Rod
