The G21 READERSHIP POLL

As noted in our 2004 year-end Person of the Year poll, there are people making positive contributions to life on Earth. All-too-often, we focus far afield in those types of surveys rather than close to home. So this poll asks you to reverse that trend.

THE POLL QUESTION: What five people in your personal life or community have had the greatest impact for good for you and/or your family and neighbors?

DEADLINE: 30 JUNE, 2005. The responses and results will appear in July. Thanks in advance!

THE WORLD - From C. Andrew McG., Raleigh, NC, USA:

SUBJECT: Goodyear in Latin America, advertising

Hey, there. I know you all did some reporting on Goodyear's racist adverts in Peru, to wit, that they were comparing the tires to a blackfaced, Buckwheatish caricature's lips. Can you get me the story and, even more importantly, the commercial itself? I need it for a race discrimination suit I am working against Goodyear in North Carolina (fed court). I will owe you BIGTIME!

Resp.,
Andrew

ROD RESPONDS:

Andrew,

Thanks for visiting G21 and for writing. I'm surprised that you would ask about that *ancient* investigative series we ran so many years ago! The few people who did read the entire series -- including the letters of apology from Goodyear, Quaker Oats, et al. thought it was a groundbreaker for us. I can't send you a copy of the ad because it only ran abroad and we only got wind of the whole thing -- and looks for all involved -- by accident.

Now, here's a sad internet story for you: About six years back we decided to change ISPs. At that time, my then-Site Administration was *supposed* to produce a tape archive (TAR) of all the back issues -- even from the days when we ran on the WELL (Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link) and didn't have our own domain name. Well, to give you the "Reader's Digest" version, that series of articles got lost in the shuffle, eaten by the ether, never to see the light of day again. I still very much lament the loss. I keep hoping some Loyal Reader will pop up and tell me they printed it out....

ANDREW RESPONDS:

Tell you what, Rod. You and I are ideological brothers. And I did not find the article, but it just so happens that I did hear back from "Inside Edition." They have a copy of the commercial from their "news" segment, and they are gonna send it to me eventually. It's not your piece but it's probably something borne of your piece. I'll forward the video once I get a copy.

Take care and keep up the good work! Hasta la victoria!

Resp.,
Andrew McG.

From Ed B., New Orleans, LA, USA:

Subject: PER YOUR ARTICLE: http://www.g21.net/mars416.htm

Glass House,

Anyone that would write such an article without due and detailed investigation of this subject is just plain IGNORANT!? First I should let you know that I live in New Orleans, Louisiana, and I'm WHITE!? I'm sure that much of the south will tell you they are from Dixie, from their IGNORANCE, because the don't even have a clue where the term came from in the first place.?

New Orleans, Louisiana has been practicing racial tolerance longer than any other city in the United States, being the ONLY state of the CSA that openly had FREE PEOPLE OF COLOR.? This particular quote is highly offensive to me;

"What is at issue is an acceptance that treating Black people differently, and as inferiors, is institutionalized in Southern practice and not treated as the heinous crime that it remains."
Living in the south, in a city that has a black majority, it's NOT the blacks that are the most common victims of the prejudice you spout about. More often than not, it's the whites that deal with prejudice on a daily basis.? This is NOT an issue with all blacks, but mainly those born from the 70's on.? Rather than embracing tolerance as I was raised to do during the 60's and early 70's, the younger black population perpetrate any number of what would be considered gross acts of prejudice upon anyone that aren't in their racial circle.? Not because they have any reason whatsoever to perpetrate these acts, but because they fail to educate themselves about such things, and are oblivious to the fact that tolerance works both ways. You cannot be a prejudice pig and expect the problem EVER to be corrected.? Hense, Dr. Martin Luther King is rolling in his grave now, not because of the gross violations of civil rights against his own people, but those of his own race that have effectively buried his "dream" with the the violation of civil rights against other races, particularly who they perceive as "white."

Prejudice is ugly no matter whom it is is perpetrated on...PERIOD!!!

Now lets see if you publish any of this email as a rebuttal, and my statement that to portray racisim as something "white southern" people as institutionalize is not only wrong, but is so also frighteningly narrowminded.? In fact, I'm of the opionion that the tone of this article is a heinous crime in itself!!!

ROD RESPONDS:

Ed,

Thanks for visiting G21 and for taking the time to write and express your opinion. It's appreciated.

The fact is, if I'm doing my job here, I'm not preaching to the choir, I'm "afflicting the comfortable." That means I'm supposed to provoke responses like yours, challenging to look at another perspective on the issue(s).

If you didn't like that editorial, you probably won't like the current one, either.

But that's good for both of us.

BTW, you might not be aware that I lived and worked in New Orleans for over three years. Didn't run into too much of that tolerance you mentioned ...

Regards,
Rod
