THE WORLD - Image of a small globe encased in a larger gridded globe. From Jean H., (No City Provided,) UK:

Hello

I'm researching my family tree, typed in Harrismith, South Africa and up came your web site. I'm trying to trace a relative Arthur G Robbins. He arrived in Johannesburg in 1889, and spent 3 years there. In 1893, he moved to Harrismith, Orange free State, and at some time opened a Watchmaker & Jewellers shop in Stuart street, Harrismith, he was there for at least 5 years. Having read your letter, that you went to Harrismith, I would dearly love to know whether by any chance his Jewellers?shop is still there?

I hope you don't mind me contacting you, I know its a long shot but I have to try! Is there any chance you may know of anyone I could contact i.e. Archives that may have some records of my relative?

.

My e-mail address is XXXXXXX

Thank you for your time

Regards

Jean H

Hey Rod:

Hadn't stopped into the "G" for a while, read Ken's piece on Africa-China relations.? What a balanced piece - back, forth and?back again.? The positives, the negatives,?carefully laid out and considered?but no claim to having all the answers.? Really enjoyed it.

I also read your "Smoke &?Mirrors" bit about your exchange with your?friend Ric(putative? - bitter man, bitter) - had one of those meetings this past week with someone who wouldn't give an INCH!? It was my Pastor: he was calling for "unity, unity", and I tried to point out(privately) some areas where some members of our congregation were forming cliches and so forth.?He vehemently denied that there were problems. ?He really looked like he wanted to deck me when I asked," if there are no problems, why have you been preaching unity?for the last 5-6 weeks - isn't?it a waste of time if there are no problems?"? He ain't happy with me but I noticed he changed his "tune" a little.?? Gee, don't tell me people are killing each other, tell me WHY, give some examples of WHAT they could do differently -m.f'r!!

I gotta go man, gonna try to check in a little more often.

?

Hey, I like to hear you have a new love interest going.?Heh, the old dog remembered where he buried his bone - finally. LOLOLOLLOLOLOLOL.

Image of a small globe encased in a larger gridded globe. From Paul T., Santa Cruz, CA, USA:

Rodyah,

The article currently standing on the mag is most disheartening.

"China recently overtook the UK as the fourth largest economy in terms of GDP, but in terms of purchasing power parity," It is accepted that the PPP theory is without value. China only seeks to create a foothold in Africa, and then, do exactly what the Belgiums, germans, british did to maintain control of natural resources.

"refusing to cooperate with the rest of the international community" The CCP will never, NEVER! reciprocate. I am taking Mandarin as I told you of my class schedule. My tutor is a bad-boy, 14 years soccer semi-pro, good mate! His explanations to me of Chinese governmental structure are very similar to ours currently. Ours currently would be reference to Jon Stewart. Daily Show.

KEN KAMOCHE RESPONDS:

rod

good to a see a debate going! for the african traders finding themselves squeezed out of business by cheap chinese imports, it's irrelevant how economists measure china's economic might. for africa, the real challenge is: how do you dance with a giant without getting your toes crushed?

cheers!

Subject: Ngugis langauge blending

Kamoche is right on target in pointing Ngugi not to preach water and drink wine.? It is so refreshing to hear someone write so eloquently and give such helpful suggestions as to what can be done to preserve our languages.? I encourage Kamoche to know that although his view might not be heard or ?taken very kindly simply because of the caliber of person the ?subject of his criticism, a few of us language students will take head and challenge ourselves to find words more appropriate in keeping the indigenous languages intact.?? Listening to Kamemfm has really made me aware of the danger our languages, and especially Gikuyu , are facing. Keep up the good work Kamoche

Subject: Listyn, Religion and AIDS

Hello, my name is Listyn. I am a senior high school student and I am writing a paper on world issues and I have chosen HIV/AIDS. I Stumbled upon G21 Africa and I really enjoyed reading Mputhumi Ntabeni's writing about religion and AIDS in Africa. I don't have a snide remark. I promise. I am a Christian, and I respect the points made about Fundamentalism within a church. I agree. I think that it's wonderful?Ntabeni is making this known to others. Thank you.

MPHUTHUMI NTABENI RESPONDS:

Hi

Thank you very much for taking time to write to us, it's always heartning to see someone out there is listening and understanding.

Kind regards,

Image of a small globe encased in a larger gridded globe. From Cheryl T., New Orleans, LA, USA:

Hi Rod,

It's Cheryl from New Orleans. I want to thank you for sharing your memories of Bucky on your site. I've read it a thousand times.

I don't know if you have seen any of the footage or stills from the second line. It was really magical. Hundreds of people came to say good-bye; some came to say hello. I'm sure that if he knew how many people loved him he would still be with us today. Nonetheless, he was very much beloved and will be a legend in death the way he was in life.

I miss him every minute of every?day and am still in a fog, trying to figure out what to do next and how to go on without him. He was, he is, my inspiration, I?just need to know where to find him now. Bucky was always in a long, slow, inexorable dance with death. I just thought that once he met me he'd give her up. That's the Pollyanna in me.

I admire the way you have kept up with life in New Orleans even though you have a whole new life. Only a?confident person keeps ties with his past...it is the mark of someone without regrets. Or the mark of someone without conscience ;)

Much love and thanks,
Cheryl

ROD RESPONDS:

Cheryl,

Thanks for visiting G21 and for writing.? It's appreciated.

As you may gather, I did care very much Bucky, and respect him.? I continue to care very much about the City that Care Forgot and many of the people who have chosen to be there.? At the same time, I feel that it is a city that has suffered a great deal of psychic damage.? That was evident to me in the few short weeks I returned. I met so many people unaware, or unwilling to acknowledge, the damage done.? I hope the city and its people will heal one day but sense that healng will be a long time coming.

I appreciate your taking the time to write me.? I trust you're entering what will be a joyous holiday season.? I'd very much love to receive any still you might have from the Second Line.

Regards,
Rod
