And You think WHAT?

From Ted F., (No City Provided,) USA:

im in a local punk band and im wondering if i could use the phrase "The blood of Mathew Shepard is on our hands." in my song. I have been trying to write a tribute song to Matt for a while and I think this is what I need to start me off. Personally I'm not gay but I'm pro-choice and I believe that people should be able to do whatever makes them happy. So hopefully you will let me use the phrase thanx. PINS

ROD RESPONDS: Ted, use the phrase in the spirit it was given and perhaps open a few minds. Regards.

Ed C. Pontiac, MI, USA:

Yahoo!

Damn, Rod, it was like a surreal dream of one of the kinds of days I had recommended for you. I think therapy could work wonders on you: You are obviously open to subliminal messages And body language. The hottie(Vampyra) is not a land mine waiting to blow your legs & nuts off: a lot of this "you couldn't ask this chick for the time" thinking is psychologically induced. If you visualize her as someone's kid sister, lonely, suffering from the occasional bout of intestinal disurbance like everyone else, she is just as approachable as someone a lot lower on the food chain. Part of being "edgy" is the convincingness of your "No Fear" approach. Just gird up your loins and go forth young man.

Peace,
Ed C.

P.S. Speaking of girding your loins," Wrap your wacker, before you attack her". LOL

P.S.S Clean out your closet BEFORE you go shopping and drop it off at a charity,so you HAVE to get some new threads. Start small: socks, drawers.....

From Catherine R., (No City Provided,) Delaware, USA:

i have been avoiding andovernet and g21 cuz you weren't there.

glad that you have resurrected...and, to think that i was having doubts about the Resurrection.

don't go away. stay put.

From Ed C., Pontiac, MI, USA:

Rod, loved Lionel Rolfe's article. It's so true that mass transit and rapid transit are not the same. Where I live, about 20 miles north of Detroit,MI, the local transit authority runs the buses 20 hours a day; on the main run(Woodward Avenue) leading from Detroit to the burbs, there are usually less than 5 passengers and frequently none. And to think, Woodward used to have a trolley line. We also have lost our Detroit to Pontiac(were I grew up and currently work) train line; most of the track was torn out to turn into nature trails - ah yes, more pollution! And to think, this county has the fourth highest lung cancer rate in the entire United States!

That's the type of in-depth, serious coverage I would like to crank myself into writing....energy looking for a topic.

Ed C.

From Tony D. (No City Provided.) CANADA:

Dear Sir:

As a Catholic husband of an Anglican wife, with two children of our own, how am I to explain to my kids the carnage I see all too often on the television, from Northern Ireland? How am I to explain to my three year old daughter (much too young to be allowed to watch the TV news), that a Christian might be allowed to kill another Christian, in the name of Jesus Christ?

I don't pretend to be a very good Catholic, but I must ask this: Who dares invoke His name in the commission of homicide? Just what were the Commandments for?

Thank God I live in Canada. Please allow me to indulge myself in a re-phrasing of the famous toast: "May you die in Ireland". Let me change it to, "May you live in Ireland."

And God bless you, every one.

Yours very truly,
Tony D.

From Ed C., Pontiac, MI, USA:

Whoa! That blew me away. Not to sound sick, but I love sites and books that document that kind of crap. [Without Sanctuary. ---Ed.] Understand, my parents were into Socialism and social reform since the late 40's, as my mother's family had been WWII refugees, with most family members taken to the concentration camps, some never to return. I can remember wearing a sandwich board sign protesting the Vietnam War when I was about 6 - I had adult strangers swearing at me and my parents. Then around 1971 my hometown, Pontiac, Michigan underwent court-ordered school busing for purposes of integration. Nasty people were swearing and shooting racial epitaphs at each other at each end of that first day's bus ride. Then we had the windows getting shot out. Man are people fucked up or what?

I often think of a photo from a supposedly illegal book on Vietnam; one of the pictures was of a buddhist monk who had calmly doused himself with gasoline, set down in a busy intersection and lit himself on fire to protest the war. I hope and pray that through improved, interconnected knowledge media(LOL. The Internet) more people will acknowledge the killer within and it will shame them into a more peaceful existence.

Wet-eyed & saddened,
EC

Classy Exit or What?

From Wolf DeVoon, COSTA RICA:

This is a private note to the contributors I recuited for G21.

I got fired as editor, or quit, for two reasons: Rod Amis wanted an excuse to hand the magazine over to Jules Siegel, a *name* hack who offered to take it over, and the pressure of my agenda (new writers, new energy) was too much for Rod to accept when he saw it happening in reality, not fantasy. I want to thank G21 staff writer Al Dunsmuir for accepting a new beat, which Rod said was a mistake. I asked Al to report on the struggle for freedom worldwide.

Tom Bradley sent me a fabulous sketch of life among the 'Lolomen' in China. It was precisely the sort of journalism I hoped to publish -- highly evocative first person reports from remote enclaves. Ron Skidmore was on deck for me in Japan. Brian Carnell did a great piece on police DNA databases, and John Young was composing another zany Memoire of the Information Age.

I regret and apologize for tempting Radio Raheem, Hipshot, Lionel Rolfe, Ric Williams, Greg Stone, Brian Rossborough, and David Calderwood to join my team. Although I'm no longer in a position to act on it, I stand by what I said to each of you, and I deeply admire your ability to put the truth in compelling, concise language.

Most of all, I regret that Russ Madden -- one of the finest new voices in the Objectivist tradition -- got schtupped by G21, after I made a special plea for his help. Russell has won a richly-deserved berth at Laissez Faire City Times and I hope others will submit to editor ezola@lfcity.com using my name as a reference. LFC Times pays $100 an article. I forwarded to Rod everything that was submitted to me as editor of G21. Who knows? Maybe he'll see why I worked so hard to recruit bright people who had important things to say.

I did what I could to advance the interests of dialogue. I failed. But I hope you guys take it as real evidence of my admiration and enthusiasm for writers I like and respect. Sincere thanks for your willingness to help. Sorry G21 let you (and me) down so abruptly. The new editor, Jules Siegel, has an entirely different agenda than mine, so G21 is probably no longer interested in what Rod Amis angrily and ignorantly called 'amateur writers' like us. I can take a lot of crap, but not that. He and Siegel and G21 can go to hell.

I would not have undertaken editorship, except that Rod begged me to take the job. The outcome demonstrates pretty plainly the vice of altruism.

Wolf DeVoon

From Bob Powers, Marietta, OH, USA:

Taking a moment away from my Slashdot editing, I just had to respond to the Wolfman's meanderings. Thank God he's out! He is the definition of jerk, with a capital J. And he's an asshole, a double-crossing bastard, and a well-rid-of s.o.b.İ

Most of all, he's a liar, with all the compliments he was throwing my way while planning to have me walk the plank and take a dip into the briny ocean. İ

Permission granted, should you wish, to forward this to the G21 regulars.

Bob

From Felicity Ussher, London, UK:

dearest all,

I missed all the excitement! was away in Spain. now I find out that the sh-- has not just hit the fan, but got mushed into little pieces and hurled around the room. (whose neck is it dripping down now?)

Can't say I wasn't expecting this, though. I tend to mistrust people who shower me with compliments, claim me for a kindred spirit when they don't even know me, and then fail to reply to a simple email request (about LF City).

I shall now pretend that the reason I haven't filed any copy this month is that I was waiting for all this to sort itself out. Whereas in fact it was the old excuses - work, work and work. But great to see you back in the helm, Rod. Or Jules ... I liked your email and I agree, things are moving too fast. Chiiiiiiiiiiilllll. I vote Raheem - as a relaxed person - decides what happens from here.

(but personally, I think Rod, you stay or we close the magazine. It's your mag. That's a wonderful thing.)

Next Saturday, I'm away to Tokyo! A three week trip across the length of southern Japan by Bullet Train and then to Perth and back. I shall write. And you, dear friends, shall get the results.

Also, my stepfather has broken free of his corporate existence and is off back-backing round south america, starting today. He's planning to write a diary and airmail it home. (even in these modern times!) it might be worth me skimming through and seeing if any of the anecdotes are funny ...

Love,
Fliss

From Radio Raheem, Oakland, CA, USA:

I tried to tell the Wolfman: one hand brings up vengeance, the other hand reach down and bring up retribution.

For all his oh-so-sincere whining, the Wolfman never had any concern for anybody's ideas except his own. One thang about the RodMan, he actually knew the meaning of COMPASSION. RodMan walks the walks.

Peace Out!

THE WORLD'S MAGAZINE, THE WORLD'S MAILBOX

From Wendy Wu, New York, NY, USA:

Dear Editor ,

The Museum of Modern Art is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition, "Making Choices." This explores the genesis of classic modern design and its aesthetic philosophy, both of which shaped the integration of design into everyday living. Many of the items on exhibit, are in the MoMA Design Collection; authorized reproductions of some items are currently featured at The MoMA Online Store, for example the Eames and Wassily chairs.

This is a wonderful opportunity for our audience to see a "modern classic," learn the history of its design and designer, and then if they wish purchase an authorized replica. We would appreciate a listing of this singular opportunity to view a significant exhibition linked to the chance to purchase authorized reproductions of featured works.

Here is a short listing summary for your reference- Making Choices @ MoMA http://www.momastore.org/cgi-bin/MoMAOnlineStore.storefront/EN/hotdeals Don't simply admire the "modern classics" in "Making Choices"; sit in your own Eames or Wassily chair! Authorized reproductions of featured items, ranging from furniture to tea sets, are available at the MoMA Online Store. Remember, every purchase makes someone happy and supports the Museum's education programs.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any related questions. Thank you very much for your valuable time & efforts!

Sincerely,
Wendy Wu

The Felicja Blumental International Music Festival 2000

15-20 May, 2000

At the TelİAvivİMuseumİofİArt and the FelicjaİBlumental MusicİCenter and Library
Tel Aviv - Israel

Passionately yours...

The Felicja Blumental International Music Festival 2000 offers over 20 events between the 15th and 20th May at the TelİAvivİMuseumİofİArt and the FelicjaİBlumental MusicİCenter and Library im Tel Aviv (for more details, click here for completeİProgram) . The events range from the purely musical to the multi-disciplinary in which dramatic presentations combine with musical performance.

Among the highlights of the Festival will be the recital given by Swiss soprano EdithİMathis, who will be partnered by pianist AnthonyİSpiri, and the appearance of FreddyİKempf, British prizewinner at the 1998 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, as recitalist and also soloist with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra under the direction of UrielİSegal. The St.İLawrenceİString Quartet will feature in a program of Romantic Russian Music with EvgeniaİDodina and IsraelİDemidov of the GesherİTheater will explore the writings of Pushkin. The St. Lawrence String Quartet will also give performances of works by Schumann and Brahms, partnered by Israeli clarinetist EvgenyİYehudin and British pianist Robert Markham. Other highly anticipated artists include Milva, who will sing Brecht, accompanied by piano, guitar and accordion, and the prize-winning Zurich Piano Trio performing works by Mendelssohn, Brahms and Haydn.

As befits a Festival named in honor of a great woman pianist, it is appropriate that some events focus on the achievements of women artists such as Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Alma Mahler and George Sand.

Young Israeli talent is given a platform in such events as the Piano Marathon, the Platform for the Artists of Tomorrow, and a recital given by ShaiİWosner, prizewinner at the 1999 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. Pianist Orit Wolf will be featured in both the Women Composers and Writers program and the Marathon of Madness & Music, while pianist YossiİReshef will be perform in Chamber Music in the Galleries. As well, Master classes will be conducted by Edith Mathis , and will be followed by a concert of the participants.

The Festival will include many other interesting events, details of which may be found by clicking on Program.
